Legislation banning 100 per cent fly-in fly-out (FIFO) workforces at major mining projects will remain in effect across Queensland.
State Deputy Premier Steven Miles confirmed a recent review discovered the Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Act has significant employment and economic benefits for local communities.
“It found the legislative ban on 100 per cent FIFO workforces has, so far, been successfully applied to 71 large resources projects,” he said in a public statement.
“Stakeholders have reported that positive benefits are already flowing to local communities, thanks to the 100 per cent FIFO prohibition, and there have been no complaints of employment discrimination.”
State Resources Minister Scott Stewart revealed the review extensively engaged with representatives from industry, local government, unions, local businesses, service providers and other stakeholder groups.
“There are now 297 communities protected by the legislation,” he said in a public statement.
