Applications for the 2021 BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) apprenticeship program are now open. In February, BMA welcomed the 2020 cohort of 56 local apprentices into the program in a range of trades including mechanics, diesel fitters, electricians, auto electricians and boilermakers. Offers were made to applicants from across the region where our mines operate, including people from Moranbah, the Greater Mackay area, Blackwater, Dysart and from Central and North Queensland.

BMA Asset President, James Palmer, said that it is critical to our success that BMA’s workforce is built upon solid foundations of local people.

“While the challenges of COVID-19 continue to evolve, it’s important we continue to support the local communities where we operate. This includes seeking another strong apprentice cohort for 2021 to ensure our workforce is built upon solid foundations of local qualified tradespeople.”

“We are looking for applicants from a diverse group spanning school leavers through to mature age people, reflecting the Bowen Basin communities in which we operate.”

“These apprentices are the future of our business and the apprenticeships offer a critical pathway into a career in mining for regional communities,” said Mr Palmer.

Angela Mills, grew up in Dysart and first heard about the BMA apprenticeships as a school student at Dysart State High School. This year she started her apprenticeship at BMA’s Saraji Mine as a boilermaker as part of the 2020 intake of apprentices.

“I have found my dream career – boiler making is so interesting, because instead of replacing parts I get to make them from scratch. From my first day on the job I learned something new each day and everyone works as one team. It’s the best experience, and a chance you should take if given the opportunity.”

The 2021 apprentices will specialise in a range of trades such as Electrical, Mechanical, Diesel Fitting, Auto-Electrical, Refrigeration Mechanics and Boiler making.
