Forrestania nickel operation suspends activities following bushfire

Western Areas Ltd has suspended its’ activities following a bushfire affecting the Forrestania Nickel Operation.

Western Areas confirmed that all personnel remain safe and fully accounted for, with most staff having returned to normal working duties over the weekend.

Communications in and out of Forrestania Nickel Operation have also been returned to normal following repair over the weekend. Mains power was interrupted on Saturday, 7 December 2019, as a result of damage to three Western Power poles north of Forrestania Nickel Operation, and was restored by Sunday evening. Mining operations continued on-site using back-up power generation.

The Cosmic Boy mill operations were suspended until the power transmission was restored, however, the Company does not expect any impact to nickel production or cost guidance for FY20 as a result of the incident.

In a statement, the Company extended its thanks to the Emergency Response Team and the various firefighting teams that have assisted in keeping our people and the Forrestania operation safe.
