‘Ground collapse’ kills mine employee

A major resources company blamed an underground cavity for taking the life of a worker.

Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) confirmed one of its employees fell to his death after the ground collapsed at the Solomon Hub, about 60km north of Tom Price.

“The incident occurred when there was a collapse of ground and FMG is working closely with all relevant authorities,” the company said in a public statement.

Mining and other site operations were temporarily suspended, pending a full investigation. The Western Australian Police Force and state Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety worked with the proponent to find out exactly how the collapse happened.

FMG chief executive Elizabeth Gaines expressed her condolences and sympathy for loved ones and affected coworkers.

“This is a very sad day for Fortescue and all our thoughts are with his family as we provide our full support to them at this very difficult time,” she said in a public statement. “The wellbeing of the entire Fortescue family is our priority with a range of support services available across our sites, including the Fortescue chaplains and employee assistance program.”
