How You Can Reduce The Risk of Prostate Cancer

September 17, 2018 Tara

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia is asking Australia to get involved and help create awareness and raise the much-needed funds to assist in the fight against prostate cancer.

The risk of getting prostate cancer by the age of 75, is 1 in 7 men. That’s a very high risk for any kind of cancer. If you have members of your close family who have had prostate cancer before, your chances almost double. It’s severe cancer that kills more men than breast cancer kills women. If you haven’t been checked, that’s what this month is about. Raising awareness in the mining community is vital to creating a better understanding.

Although there are no precise ways that you can stop prostate cancer, there are some very specific things that you can be doing in your daily life to ensure it is at least prolonged.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of prostate cancer in its early stages is vital to your survival. When receiving the initial testing, although uncomfortable for most people, it is also essential. Once the initial examination is completed, if your GP believes you might be at risk of prostate cancer the next step is a biopsy.

The biopsy will be performed by a urologist, and they will remove a small sample of the prostate to check for cancerous cells. Biopsies are usually performed as an outpatient procedure, and testing of the tissue samples will take a few weeks.

REDUCING THE RISKS

There are two main ways that you can protect yourself from prostate cancer, and although there isn’t evidence that they can stop cancer, they will improve your overall health, reducing the risks.

The first is to eat a healthy diet. This goes without saying for any kind of health-related issue. However, there is evidence that shows the healthier your body is, the less risk of prostate cancer.

Diet

Eat meals that are nutritious. Refer to the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. What is good for the heart is good for the prostate. For more information visit: www.eatforhealth.gov.au

What foods should I eat?

  • Tomatoes, watermelon, and other red foods contain lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant called. Studies show that men who consume lycopene have a lower risk of prostate cancer. When it comes to lycopene, the redder the fruit, the better it is.
  • Green vegetables contain compounds break down cancer-causing carcinogens.
  • Omega-3, found in fish like tuna, salmon, sardines, mackerel, and trout may help reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer. fish oil supplements can also assist.
  • Food made from soy, lentils, chickpeas contain a nutrient called isoflavones, which can reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Green tea also has high levels of antioxidants and can also lower the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Coffee is the most studied food relating to the reduction of cancer. It is believed that every three cups of coffee you drink can reduce your risk of fatal prostate cancer about 11 percent. The chemicals that make up coffee, cafestol, and kahweol have well-known cancer-fighting abilities.
  • Nutrient-rich foods also help slow the spread of cancer

Exercise

As with any other type of health issue, daily exercise (at least 30 minutes) will lower your chances of risks. Too much body fat, particularly in the middle area of your body, is linked to an amplified risk of prostate cancer.

Quit smoking

If you smoke, you have a higher chance of your prostate cancer to be very aggressive. Smokers are also more likely to have a recurrence of prostate cancer.

If you or anyone you know are over the age of 50 and have not been tested this year, contact your GP today to make an appointment. Don’t wait around until its too late.
