A multinational resources company is experiencing severe staff shortages across its North Queensland operations.
Glencore Australia confirmed it had a hard time finding about 300 new mine employees for the past 12 to 18 months. The employer has not faced such great difficulty in finding new entry-level and skilled workers since the 2008 global financial crisis.
Glencore chief operating officer Matt O’Neill also blamed rising costs and supply chain issues for extending the length of time required to source replacement parts from a few days to a couple of weeks.
An estimated 1500 roles are still vacant at different employers across the Sunshine State according to the Queensland Resources Council (QRC).
QRC chief executive Ian Macfarlane estimates more than 73 per cent of these job opportunities have annual salaries exceeding $100,000 a year according to News Limited.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ latest labour force data shows the number of Queenslanders employed in minerals and exploration soared throughout the year.
“The four-quarter average of Queensland jobs in exploration has increased by nearly 70 per cent in 2021 to over 22,600,” State Resources Minister Scott Stewart said in a public statement.
“Jobs in the minerals mining and quarrying industries in Queensland have also reached a record four-quarter average of more than 24,100 – up a massive 28.4 per cent year on year.”
The total number of Queensland mine workers rose 13.1 per cent to almost 78,000 during the period.
