THE 2018 Queensland Mining Industry & Health and Safety Conference (August 19 -22) returns for its 30th year, with a long-standing mission to unearth the latest innovations in mine site health and safety. The annual conference will again play host to the coveted Innovation Awards on Wednesday August 22.
Renowned for shining a spotlight on the latest mining industry health & safety industry innovations and initiatives in health and safety, the Awards reflect the Resources Sector’s vision for ‘an industry free of fatalities, injuries and disease. The ten Finalists for this year’s awards have now been announced, with the shortlist featuring innovations from leading mining companies operating within Queensland, including Anglo American, Peabody, Thiess and Glencore Australia, among others. Conference co-chair Luca Rocchi said the Innovation Awards are a great way to promote the latest advancements in operational health and safety systems and practices to the mining industry. “The Innovations Awards were launched in 1998 as part of our annual conference, and have since become a highlight of our program,” Mr Rocchi said. “Over the years the mining safety conference Awards have revealed some of Queensland’s greatest, most creative practical health and safety solutions, including last year’s winning initiative ‘Safe Stop’ by Redpath Australia, which is an anti-jam door unit designed to prevent crush injuries occurred when operating heavy mobile equipment. “This year we received a number of notable award submissions, with the high calibre of finalists a representation of the industry’s proactive approach to improving health and safety standards across the board.
Chaired by Kate du Preez, Commissioner for Mine Safety and Health, the mining industry health & safety conference Innovation Presentations will also see each finalist answer a series of questions put forward by the Judging Panel, made up of six expert representatives from across the industry. Finalists will be in the running to win one of three awards – Winner, Highly Commended and People’s Choice. Sharing their success stories, finalists and delegates will hear from three previous finalists of the Innovations Awards, including Mark Gleadhill, now the Manager of Cool Mine Pty Ltd on his groundbreaking portable chilled air solution for underground mining, which took out the top spot in 2016.
Held at the Star Gold Coast from Sunday August 19 until Wednesday August 22, the 2018 Queensland Mining Industry Health & Safety Conference provides attendees plenty of opportunities to collaborate, network and up-skill with more than 40 individual industry presentations, a safety training workshop, trade displays, 8 exhibitor presentations and the industry’s Innovation and Health Program Awards ceremonies.
