New coal development announced

An Asia-headquartered mining operation is planned for New South Wales’ Orana region.

Yancoal Australia recently revealed details about its proposed Moolarben Coal Expansion, about 100km east of Dubbo.

The project involves extending existing open-cut mining operations south of the approved OC3 open cut pit. Four new open cut pits will also be developed to the east and southeast of the approved OC3 mining area within existing tenements.

Existing infrastructure, equipment and manpower will be used to recover an extra 40 million tonnes of run-of-mine coal between the years 2025 and 2034.

“There would be substantial capital savings and reduced environmental impacts associated with the use of … existing Moolarben coal complex systems and workforce,” the proponent said in its environmental impact statement.

The state’s Independent Planning Commission is expected to release a decision sometime in mid-2024.
