On May 23, the Safety Institute of Australia (SIA) signed the first Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with overseas Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP) at the SIA National Health and Safety Conference.

The MOU is a mutual recognition of each others certification programs. Patrick Murphy, SIA Chair, said, ‘The MOU doesn’t just give recognition of an individual being certified, but rather involves an extensive mapping process where each level of certification of each organisation’s program are evaluated, resulting in the streamlining of the certification process for professionals moving from one country to the other.’

SIA’s new certification program is set to international standards and is articulated against the Global Capability Framework, it joins an international community committed to advancing the capability, profile and status of the health and safety profession.

Nikki Wright, Executive Director, BCRSP, said ‘This agreement between the SIA and BCRSP supports the development of safety professionals internationally, increasing opportunities for exposure and recognition. We look forward to a long relationship with the SIA, and to the ongoing opportunity to learn from each other.’

Discussions are under way with the USA and UK bodies for further mutual recognition in the near future.
