A tyre changing incident has left a contractor in a serious condition after a truck tire he was changing exploded at the Elk Valley Coal mine in Canada.

Rick Kennedy, a Maxam Bulk Services employee, suffered a broken arm and critical head injuries when a tyre he was changing exploded in a contractor maintenance shop at Teck Coal’s Greenhills Operations near Elkford.

Nic Milligan, Manager of Social Responsibility for Teck Coal said in a media release that “The contract employee has been airlifted to hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries”

“We are focused on providing all the support we can to the affected contract employee, his family and colleagues at this difficult time,” he said.

According to the RCMP, the man was changing a tire on a 30 tonne Maxam truck when it appeared to explode. A Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources investigation is underway.
