INFECTION CONTROL PRODUCTS AND SERVICES Selecting appropriate medical tapes to prevent adhesive related skin injuries "S kin injury related to medical adhesive usage is a prevalent but under-recognised complication that occurs across all care settings from healthy patients in the ambulatory environment to acute and critically ill patients"1. and radiation patients. It delivers reliable securement*, gentle wear and atraumatic removal. Silicone adhesives have a lower surface tension than traditional acrylate adhesives, allowing the silicone to rapidly conform to the skin's natural contours and create a secure bond that remains constant over time. In contrast, conventional adhesives gradually increase contact with the skin surface and therefore increase adhesion over time. Wrong selection of product or improper application and removal techniques can result in superficial layers of the skin being removed along with the adhesive product. Removing these layers of the skin "affects skin integrity and can cause pain and the risk of infection, increase wound size, and delay healing, all of which reduce patients' quality of life"1. This skin damage can also lead to increased costs to treat the injury. To combat this growing trend, a recent consensus document was created in USA by a panel of 23 clinicians to guide clinical practice. The twenty five final consensus statements were broken into four main categories-Assessment, Prevention, Treatment and Future Research1. As part of this document, a large amount of information described selection of appropriate products and application and removal of adhesives, as these topics appear to be poorly understood in the clinical workplace. Additionally when removing the silicone adhesive the energy of the bond is able to dissipate through the adhesive rather than through the skin, so removal of the tape does not cause the skin to pull up in the same way it does with traditional adhesives. Combined with less force required to remove the tape due to its constant adhesion level, this allows less likelihood of epidermal cell stripping, as well as reducing the pain and trauma upon removal.
