While gearing up for the traditional Australia Day barbecue, I couldn’t help but reflect on the generous Australian spirit that the catastrophic floods in Queensland generated. Australians are identified by a sense of “fair go” and the spirit of “she’ll be right”, and the communities in Queensland showed the resilience, strength and mateship which shapes our nation. Although we don’t celebrate this spirit with as much grandeur and fanfare as the Americans on the fourth of July or the French on Bastille Day, one particular event which has risen in popularity and become synonymous with January 26th is the Australian of the Year Awards. During this event, held at Parliament House every year, four Australians who were nominated by members of the public are honoured for their contribution to Australian society. The awards include Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and a Local Hero Award. This year, the Senior Australian of the Year award was bestowed upon Professor Ron McCallum, accomplished lawyer and disabled rights advocate. He is the first ever completely blind recipient of the award, which further recognised his passion for social justice and tireless work for the disabled community. The Retiree managed to catch up with Professor McCallum while he was celebrating his latest achievement, and you can read the full story on page 10. Also inside this edition, Editor at Sea John Pond once again joins us to talk about all things cruise ship related. He delves into the nitty-gritty of the different types of cruises and destinations for you to consider before embarking on your next holiday, and he also shares with us an account of his latest river cruise through Europe. If you prefer something a little closer to home, Tony Karacsonyi shares with us his adventures cruising Western 2 THE RETIREE AUTUMN Australia’s Kimberly region. Also on the travel front, Steve Freeth writes about the adventures to be had in the Northern Territory, and explains why it’s not just Oprah Winfrey who has been captured by the region’s beauty. If getting back into shape after the silly season is high on your agenda, best-selling author and stretching and flexibility expert, Kit Laughlin, shares exercises that could lead to a newer you – and best of all you can do them in the comfort of your own home. Shae Baxter from the Retirement Village Association talks about life in a retirement village, dispelling the usual stereotypes which surround retirement living, and explaining why thousands of Australian seniors are choosing to make the move. On the financial front, Terri Loy from RBS Morgans discusses the Federal Government’s response to last year’s Cooper Review into the superannuation system and the implications on the self managed super fund sector. Along with the regular columns about your health, relationships, and what’s new in books, films and wine that has been jam-packed into this issue, we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it all together. If there are any issues you would like us to cover in future editions of The Retiree, or if you have any news to share about events happening in your local area, please send me an email to editor@aprs.com.au Kathryn Edwards Editor P.S.
