I would also encourage the Major Projects to support a reduction in FIFO positions within their organisations and those of their contractors, instead supporting employees to live in the communities in which they work, thereby maximising opportunities for any income earned in the region to be spent in the region.
The Surat Basin is truly the land of opportunity, so let’s learn from the lessons of Mackay and Gladstone and get it right straight away. We collectively have this opportunity in our grasp, so let’s not let it slip away in the name of competitive advantage or parochialism. The Surat Basin is already a marvellous place to work in, live in, play in and raise a family in; with Industry, Government and the Community working in harmony, just imagine how great our region will be in 10 years time.
