ASSET MANAGEMENT BRINGING DRIVER SAFETY TO THE FOREFRONT OF COMMERCIAL FLEET OPERATIONS SafeDrive International (SDI) presents a unique, multi-faceted approach to managing safe vehicle operations. Through the recognition and application of known strategies that encompass drivers, vehicles, passengers and the environment, SDI provides its clientele with the opportunity to realise world-class safety performance. Research reveals some worrying statistics1 , for example that a massive 80 to 95 per cent of vehicle accidents are caused by human error; that in recent years over 30 per cent of workplace fatalities in the oil and gas industry were transport-related; and that incidents relating to driver fatigue are reported as being on the increase. Bringing driver safety to the forefront of fleet operations is therefore a necessity for fleet operators looking to implement a comprehensive Road Safety Management System. Alan Hall, the Managing Director of SDI says, “The key is for fleet operators to adopt a turnkey solution that helps them to realise and sustain driver safety, while simultaneously reducing fleet-related costs and increasing operational productivity.” Perth-based SDI, a fully owned subsidiary of MiX Telematics Ltd, was formed in 2002 and offers a variety of services for fleets, including In-Vehicle Monitoring Systems (IVMS), and specialised post-license driver training programs. In-vehicle systems capture and record a vast amount of vehicle and driver events, enabling fleet and operations managers to make informed decisions in a timely manner. Fleet operators can track their fleets, identify poor driving trends, monitor driving hours, and manage fuel costs, among numerous other features. The key is facilitating real-time intervention when a journey is underway as opposed to the traditional approach of ‘hoping’ your employees act responsibly and drive safely. Audio and visual alerts, that form part of SDI’s solution, notify drivers of their performance as well as possible collisions before they occur. Alerts include ‘harsh braking’ and ‘over-speeding,’ and warnings should the driver unintentionally deviate from driving lanes, or drive too close to surrounding pedestrians and vehicles. “Our training programmes are highly complementary to the IVMS technology, enabling efficient and effective remedial action to be taken by fleet operators. In addition, SDI is an Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO), known for its high standard in training design and delivery,” says Hall. The company recognises the importance of results in a highly competitive market SDI’s comprehensive solution enables fleet operators to track and monitor the whereabouts of their fleets, as well as vehicle events and driver behaviour, 24-hours a day. and has demonstrated its capability through achievements that include a 72 per cent sustained improvement in driver behaviour after only six weeks following successful implementation, and 15 per cent cost savings in fuel alone, within the first 12 months. These impressive statistics are supported by feedback from customers, such as that from an Oil & Gas client from Dampier in Western Australia: “The IVMS solution from SDI provides us with an excellent tool to monitor our driving and to keep it up to standard. The information available after downloads is fantastic. It highlights the exact areas where a driver’s skills require work, and any alterations that are required in the setting of the vehicles. The system is very simple to use and there is no doubt in identifying which driver drove which vehicle at which time.” To find out more about SDI’s training programs and fleet management solutions, contact them on +61 8 9388 5800 or safety@mixtelematics.com, or visit www.mixtelematics.ae/safety 1 International Oil & Gas Producers Association About MiX Telematics Founded in 1995, MiX Telematics is a global provider of vehicle tracking and fleet management products and services to consumers and companies of all sizes in 111 countries on six continents.
