YOUR SAY Wendy Blacklock this edition's winning letter Pensioners and politics As a first time reader of The Retiree magazine I was impressed with your publication, which covered most of the needs and interests of retirees and pensioners. However, I would like to suggest a segment which could give readers the opportunity to discuss the political implications of pensioners and the 'out-of-workforce' personnel. A prime example is the biased scaremongering flood of newspaper and media negativity to taxpayers, pensioners and retirees regarding the Australian Government's 'Carbon Tax'. Firstly it is not a tax to consumers – it is a carbon pricing to be imposed on approximately 500 of the biggest polluting companies in Australia. Inevitably it will increase consumer prices but pensioners, senior card holders and retirees will be compensated to at least 20 per cent more than their average price impact. The most important aspect of this carbon pricing is the building of a clean energy climate for our future generations. I hope the informative material of The Retiree acts as a counter to some of the morbid newspaper reporting. Doug Lavender Plympton Park, SA Thank you for your wonderful article on Wendy Blacklock [Next stage beckons for Aussie theatre veteran – winter]. It brought back many memories of seeing her on stage and of course in her memorable TV role of 'Mummy'. I must say I was not aware of the amazing work she has been doing 'behind the scenes' including promoting Australian Indigenous theatre across the world. It is great to hear what she has been up to and she truly deserves the commendations she has received for her hard work. I wish Wendy all the best in her retirement. It is not an easy transition but someone with Wendy's energy, dedication and drive will be sure to be her efforts to good use. Margaret Woodward Seven Hills, NSW Active mind When my grandchildren bought me a mobile phone I was so disappointed I nearly threw it right back at them! But now fast-forward two years I'm using the phone to send text messages and I'm even downloading some music on it. I have since also enrolled in an adult computer course. It's a lot of fun, I'm learning a lot and I'm able to surprise my grandchildren with my technical skills. Your article on adult education was very true [Keeping your mind active, learning in the senior years – winter]. Learning is possible in the senior years and best of all it's fun! Elizabeth Creswick Eastwood, NSW 4 THE RETIREE SPRING Thank you I felt like treating myself to a new magazine. There were several in our newsagent that I hadn't noticed before. The Retiree caught my eye and a browse through the list of contents clinched it. What I really like is the way topics are dealt with in some depth rather than glossed over. It's a magazine I'll be keeping and using as a reference. What would improve it for me would be an expansion of the 'me-time' section to include more puzzles and also a short story. That would make The Retiree feel more interactive.
