AND O ver 1000 entries were received from around the world, from countries as far and wide as Ukraine, India, Ghana, Italy, Scotland, Peru, USA and Tasmania. This year's overall winner was "inspired by the beauty of the Urubamba salt mine". Joe Dordo Brnobic's photograph titled "Urubamba salt mine consists of thousands of pools filled with salt saturated water that filters through salt deposits above the mine", was judged the clear winner by the selection panel, once again lead by renowned Australian Landscape Photographer Richard Woldendorp. According to Joe, a Canadian sound technician, he was inspired by the "hard work of the people that work at the mine and by the fact that they use the same methods that their Inca ancestors used hundreds of years ago. The mine is also known by the name 'Salinas de Maras' and had been in operation since pre-Columbian times." Woldendorp said the judging of the Snowden photo competition gets more difficult each year, but he enjoys the challenge. "It is not often that you get to see such a variety of cultures, subjects and locations in a single competition." The competition is now in its seventh year. Snowden's CEO, Craig Morley, commented on the Company's ongoing commitment to the photo competition saying, "Each year we get a fantastic range of photographs which reflect the diversity and changing face of our Industry. As a consulting company, Snowden works on projects all over the world and our consultants experience many of the situations reflected in these images. The competition gives us an opportunity to focus on celebrating mining, both within the industry and to the general public, while at the same time photograph sales allow us to give something back via local charities." This year a special commendation was made for the photograph titled, "Frank's bits" taken by Carol Maney at the Tasmania mine site. Accorging to the photographer, "Frank has mining stories which could keep one listening [14] QLD Mining and Energy Bulletin Spring 2011 CELEBRATED 2011 Snowden photo competition winners announced! for hours. The People's Choice winner will be based on the number of public votes received on the Snowden website for any of the exhibition photographs. The winner will be announced at the beginning of October and will win a prize of AUD$1,000. This year, the Perth exhibition will be open for a two week period at Central Park Office Tower in early October, and the Brisbane exhibition will be at the Riverside Centre from the end of October. The exhibition will then move to Johannesburg where it will be on display in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange building in late January, before going down to Cape Town for the Indaba conference held at the Cape Town Exhibition centre in early February.
