90 The Australasian Mine Safety Journal Spring 2011 Blasting, drilling and detonation historic Company – New Technology – Daveytronic SP Davey Bickford formed in France in 1836, Davey Bickford Australia Pty Ltd started trading in May 2005. The global company specialises in the development, design and marketing of High-tech Electronic Detonators and their associated Initiation Systems which are highly effi cient, extremely reliable and very safe with proven results. We provide full system and customer support as well as a growing global technical services division. T he Daveytronic SP system is used in both wired and wireless confi gurations in both Open Cut and Underground Operations, features large blast capability, coupled with industry-leading safety, reliability and accuracy at a realistic price level. Current customer base is Australia wide from large iron ore and coal to standard underground mines plus also the quarry and construction industry. The system has consistently improved since its introduction into Australian conditions with new applications such as: Remote Blasting Repeater Capabilities – The Daveytronic SP system can reconfi gure parts of its own hardware to become mobile repeaters to increase wireless fi ring capabilities. Trailer-mounted solar-charged repeaters can also be supplied with the system as required. This gives consistent long-range wireless fi ring capabilities resulting in both increased safety of blasting personnel allowing them to retreat outside of signifi cant blast exclusion zones for either projection of rock or for the current hot topic of blast created fumes and reduced pit production downtimes as multiple pits can be fi red from the one position and time. Multi Blast – The Daveytronic SP system is now also capable of simplifying open cut situations that fi re multiple blasts per day and require several production operation stoppages to achieve the required blasts. Multi Blast can have several blasts communicating with the Remote Blasting Machine at one time and then allow for consecutive fi ring of the blasts in accordance with location procedures. This technology coupled with the above mentioned repeater capabilities allows large mining operations and even multi pit operations to save time and costs associated with operational stoppages required for blasting operation. UG Firing capabilities – Due to customer requests the Daveytronic system can also securely fi re through a majority of Underground Leaky Feeder communication systems. This technology is quite simple and successful at small / medium UG operations where good reliable communications are confi rmed. The Daveytronic system has options for fi ring through long distance fi ring cables to ensure good communications with the detonators this is determined on a site by site basis. The Daveytronic system is now an accepted proven Electronic Detonator System in Australia with many customers surpassing 100,000 detonators without issues and consistently fi nding benefi ts of having the fl exibility of electronic detonator accuracy coupled with reliability and backed by support and design software that allow for simplifi ed implementation into new applications and sites. Either utilising current site blast timing design software to communicate with the Daveytronic hardware or introducing either new basic or complex software as required for each site.
