ISLAND TRAVEL Seminyak The beach town of Seminyak, located on the shores south- west of Denpasar, is quickly establishing itself as the island's 5-star epicenter. Everything here is much more luxurious than in other towns: deluxe resorts, boutiques, restaurants and day- spas attract a more discerning crowd and give this place a rather elegant atmosphere. Seminyak is where the attempts to upgrade Bali's attractions are most obvious. No longer just a hippie surfer's paradise, this side of Bali can compete with anything found on the French Riviera…at half the price and boasting friendlier locals and better weather. While Seminyak beach and Kuta beach are essentially conjoined, the former is much quieter and perfect for those wanting a more secluded getaway. If basing yourself here, don't forget to check out Pura Petitenget, one of the most important Hindu temples on the island. Elaborate ceremonies are held here every week and give a glimpse of the endearing local culture. 22 THE RETIREE SUMMER Jimbaran Over the last 20 years, many world renowned resorts have made Jimbaran their home and, while several mid-range hotels can also be found here, the backpackers' scene is most defi nitely absent. The main beach is cocooned in a secluded bay, making Jimbaran the perfect destination for anyone who wishes not to share the waters with vigorous young surfers. The distinct lack of nightlife here is a defi nite bonus for those wanting a more relaxing holiday. The myriad of seafood restaurants clustering the shoreline attract a sizeable evening crowd, making Jimbaran feel buzzy and vibrant without it being at all obnoxious. Nusa Dua If world class golfi ng is your thing, you may want to head to Nusa Dua instead. Located on the western tip of the island, Nusa Dua has suffered some unfair press in the last few years. The island's most popular golf resort is found here, but most other tourists seem to be wary of this artifi cial enclave, even though there are some gorgeous resorts to be found. Often described as 'sterile and uninteresting', Nusa Dua may at fi rst seem like a rather claustrophobic theme park (complete with gated entrances), but once past the security check you may be pleasantly surprised to discover gorgeous sandy beaches and calm, warm waters. For a local touch, head to the public beach at Geger and let one of the local ladies work her magic on a beachside massage bed. Many water activities including parasailing, jet skiing and diving, can be booked directly on the beach. With world-class scuba diving and snorkeling, tempting food, fun shopping and inspiring temple- crawling up for grabs, it is no wonder Bali has become one of the world's most beloved holiday spots. Here you'll fi nd the perfect accommodation, side trip and shopping spree to suit your needs and budget. Whilst on a mission to discover the truth about Bali, I discovered that it really is the ultimate chameleon. Turns out Bali can be anything you want it to be. Mission accomplished.
