114 The Australasian Mine Safety Journal Summer 2011/12 Products and services banner HAND PROTECTION HIGH PERFORMANCE HAND PROTECTION FOR MINE WORKERS Mining and other extractive industries have always presented a hazardous environment for the hands of workers. Manipulation of heavy, often lubricated or wet objects calls for positive grip as well as protection from chemical irritants. Other work sites can expose workers to risk of cuts and flash burns. Ansell has the solution to help address these common safety issues. Left: AlphaTec® 58-270 Glove Right: PoweFlex® 80-813 Glove The AlphaTec® 58-270 Glove: For positive grip A lightweight chemical-resistant, liquid-proof glove, Ansell's AlphaTec® 58-270 has been designed to protect the hands of workers who handle oily or slippery equipment and parts in places where chemicals or oils are present. The company says many solvents, oils and other chemicals can cause skin irritations, burns and allergic reactions. Avoiding skin contact by using a high performance, chemical resistant glove is an efficient approach to help protect workers' skin. According to an Ansell internal survey, workers claimed there wasn't a suitable glove that protected their skin from dermal damage without compromising comfort, grip and dexterity. The AlphaTec 58-270 fulfils this need by providing an ideal combination of comfort, precise handling, industry leading grip and skin protection. The PowerFlex® 80-813 Glove: Combining cut resistance with flame protection The PowerFlex® 80-813 glove was developed by Ansell as the first glove that offers a combination of high levels of flame resistance, cut protection and comfort. Testing of this glove was conducted in one of the world's most demanding work environments – the oil sands operations in Canada*, which provided the perfect setting to test the limits of this glove. Over 200 workers tested the PowerFlex 80-813 in 12 different applications including construction, electrical work, heavy maintenance and repair, oil refining and pipe fitting. Their top rated features included fit, feel and grip.* The PowerFlex 80-813 provides the highest level of flame resistance as measured by the European EN407 standards. The flame-resistant proprietary foam coating provides enhanced grip in dry, wet and oil applications, and also results in reduced worker fatigue as well as improved work productivity. Ansell says there has been positive feedback from workers using the PowerFlex 80-813 in Australian mines, citing high comfort and protection levels as key benefits.
