T In accordance to Australian Standards 1319.1994, Safety Signs are classifi ed into four main categories – do you know what they are? Danger, Prohibition, and Warning signs are not forms of classifi cation. o ensure you have the correct signs displayed in the right location, it is essential that you understand the defi nition of each classifi cation. 1. Regulatory signs are signs containing instructions. These signs are divided into smaller categories; a. Prohibition – signs that indicate an action or activity is not permitted - "CAN'T DO" b. Mandatory – signs giving an instruction that "MUST" be carried out c. Limitation or Restriction – sets a defi ned limit on an activity or use of a facility – commonly used for speed limits. Failing to comply to Standards constitutes either an offence at law, or a breach of safety procedures or other directions – dependent on the kind of controls imposed at the work site or workplace. 2. Hazard signs are signs advising of risks. Like Regulatory signs, they are also divided into the following headers; a. Danger – warns of a particular hazard or hazardous condition that is likely to be life- threatening – situations or actions that could possibly "KILL YOU" b. Warning – warn of a hazard or hazardous condition that is not likely to be life threatening, but could still "HURT YOU". 3. Emergency information signs indicate the location of, or directions to, emergency related facilities such as exits, safety equipment or fi rst aid facilities – these signs are used to "INFORM YOU". 4. Fire signs advise the location of fi re alarms and fi refi ghting facilities and equipments; this classifi cation is also a mean of an "INFORM YOU" sign. Display signs to educate employees and visitors about company procedures and safety policies, and warn of hazards.
