DIABETIC DRAMAS Inspirational Thank you for your article on Father Chris Riley [Kids' saviour – Summer]. Father Chris has been in the media a lot lately and I was certainly aware of the wonderful work he does with Sydney's youth. What I wasn't aware of though was his history and how he decided to work with trouble teenagers at such a young age. He really has dedicated his entire life to this cause and to be that focused and determined when he was just a teenager himself is truly astonishing. He is clearly a remarkable man. I am interested to know if there are similar schemes operating in other Australian cities? I sure do hope so as Father Chris is correct – our children are worth investing in. Betty Smyth | Melbourne, VIC For the past few years my husband has been recovering from a kidney transplant along with battling type 2 diabetes which was brought on by the post-surgery medications he took to avoid rejection of the new kidney. Overall he has managed his type 2 diabetes quite well with tablets, close monitoring and healthy lifestyle. Although the improved exercise routine recommended by the doctor was a little diff icult at first, as his walks left him short of breath, his fitness improved by starting with small walks and gradually increasing them. In my experience, through supporting my husband, I believe it's important for everybody to understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, especially for us baby boomers. Thank you for highlighting the issue, risk factors, symptoms, prevention and management [A spoonful of knowledge helps the blood sugar go down – Summer]. Maintaining a healthy diet and keeping physically active can help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. Sarah Hernsheim | Blacktown, NSW **This edition's winning letter** Cooking capers Wow!
