GOURMET FOOD AND WINE flavour of fresh baked bread. It finishes crisp and dry and you end up just wanting more. Bravo! That ominous geneticist, Dr. S, was having none of this frivolity. “Boating is a serious business,” he boomed from his fold up camping chair, as he cracked the screw cap of a rather excellent McLaren Vale shiraz. “A full bodied drop showing a wonderful restrained lusciousness, suggesting excellent oak handling and fruit that is not overripe. Plenty of summer berries and blueberry flavours with just a hint of pepper” he opined. I found it very tasty indeed, especially when it can be had for around $16 per bottle!! So whose is it? Waywood Wines McLaren Vale Shiraz 2008. A new kid on the block, but the winemaker Mr Andrew Wood’s deft handling makes it worth hunting out. Also, look out for his Waywood’s Pinot Grigio 2010 as well, piercingly crisp and dry with just a hint of Turkish Delight. The best dry PG I’ve seen in ages! And while I’m talking about crisp dry whites, I should make mention of a West Aussie riesling I had last week. I love West Aussie rieslings, so pure and racy. And this one certainly fits the bill. Plenty of the usual lime/ citrus and soft floral flavours, but this wines acidity, so racy and feathery, is what makes this wine stand out from the crowd. Made by industry legend, Larry Cherubino, his Ad Hoc Wallflower Mt Barker Riesling 2010 is a treat. So after a belly full of fresh figs, a last slurp of Sheer Drop fizzy, Captain Jim called time on the riverbank picnic. Back in the old boats, we spent the rest of what was a magically sunny and calm afternoon being harassed by water-skiers and their high powered speed boats, along with the frenzied activities of the local jet-skiers and the massive wash coming off a rather large paddle boat. So it was one of those classic “Vesta situations”! And the Certificate of Happiness? That’s what Captain Jim presented to me at the end of our splendid put-put down the Murray! Now did I ever tell you about my other favourite book, “Tales of a Rat Hunting Man”? I’ll leave that for another day… Graham Wright is director of The Odd Whiskey Coy, Australia’s only specialist importer and retailer of fine, rare, hard to find and downright drinkable single malt whiskies.
