BANNER BANNER CRUISE SHIP TRAVEL ALL SHIPS AND special offers, two for one, single supplement waivers and more. When one has chosen a ship or shipping line (which is something I tend to do first) we have to decide on our destination; Pacific, Mediterranean, Caribbean, Alaska, European rivers, Asian rivers and more. The choice goes on and on and can be a minefield for the non- initiated, and also I might add, for many travel agents whose specialised knowledge is often lacking. I cannot emphasise how important it is to seek out a certified cruise agent, one approved by the International Cruise Council of Australasia who will take the time to get to know you and your vacation preferences. This can make such a difference when one tends to build up a personal client/agent relationship, which as any dedicated cruiser will tell you, can make all the difference to your cruising enjoyment. All certified agents will have their credentials on display. Booking cruises with a non certified travel agent may lead to a cruise that is just not right for you. D 76 THE RETIREE AUTUMN ecisions, decisions – there are river cruises, adventure cruises, standard, luxury and premium. There are Cruises There are so many types of cruises available that it is often hard for “those new to cruising” to make a selection, writes John Pond. There are several grades of cruise ships, from cargo ships with passengers to famous giants. The ships are rated, not unlike hotels, with a star rating system, the biggest range fall in the 4 and 5 star category, with a handful of 6 star ships. Most ships regularly in our waters are 4 star with the occasional 5 and 6 star passing through on their world voyages. The main difference between 4, 5 and 6 stars is their level of service, food quality and choice, luxury linens and more. Most 6 star ships offer unlimited complimentary beverages throughout the voyage. They have a higher ratio of staff to passengers, hence usually superior service, often with your own butler. Dry cleaning and laundry is usually complimentary, as are many shore excursions on the higher rated ships. Tipping is often included and your every need is catered for. I cruise throughout the year, mostly aboard 4 and 5 star ships and I rarely find anything to complain about. All the services, especially in the food and beverage areas, are without doubt better than one would find ashore at even the best restaurants and hotels. I usually choose a ship first, then decide which destination. Avoid northern hemisphere summers as this is peak season, I prefer to travel this region in April, May, August and September.
