Sound education It is estimated that over one million Australians are at risk from noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) due to occupational noise, and workers in the mining industry are at particular risk due to high-noise tasks and long working hours. It is no surprise then that appropriate assessment of this widespread workplace hazard is vital. M ost state OH&S legislation requires assessments to be carried out by "competent noise assessors", but what does that mean in practice? Specialist acoustic consultants can be brought in, but an alternative path is taken by WA's Dept of Mines and Petroleum: Anyone in the industry can become a competent noise assessor provided they successfully complete an approved Noise Officer Course. Queensland Mining & Energy Bulletin – 1:1.26 H:W Ratio – Stewart Wood 1.7.2011 Rev 001 – Layout 1 Noise and Vibration Measurement Systems Pty Ltd (NVMS) is Australia's leading provider of the Noise Officer Course, and their highly-regarded training is now available in Brisbane. Aimed primarily at the mining industry but applicable to any workplace, the course covers all aspects of occupational noise assessment from acoustic theory, practical sound level meter use and hearing protection through to noise exposure calculation, engineering noise controls, and reporting. For an assessment to be useful, the noise report needs to highlight specific improvements that can be made on the worksite to reduce the hazard and associated risk to employees, so NVMS's Noise Officer Course revolves around three key questions: Who is at risk; what's causing the hazard; and, what can be done about it? By the end of the course – which is assessed by means of an exam and follow-up noise report – attendees will have all the tools needed to answer these questions in detail. Following the training requirements set out in AS/NZS1269.1-2005 and augmented by the presenters' combined 45 years of practical noise experience, the NVMS Noise Officer Course provides clear, practical and relevant education to make a real difference.
